SUMMARY OF THE BAPTIST CHURCH PLANTING LIST
===========================================
Moderated and edited by Pastor Harry Shelton Cole
===========================================
Introduction: Music can really enhance the services of a church planter.
The question of the week is for that great man of God that God has called
to plant a church who has little or no ability in the area of music. Music
is a wonderful way to prepare the hearts of people for the Word of God and
it is a meaningful way to worship God in spirit and in truth. To enhance
that aspect of ministry in the church planter's beginning can make a world
of difference.
I appreciate all the answers that were offered in the way of help and I
want to thank all those who had input on this important question.

Baptist Church Planters List - Question of the Week
===================================================
How can the average church planter enhance his music service? (Please list
details about resources if you mention them and whether or not you have
used them.)
===================================================
Ed DeVries is an evangelist and prospective church planter in the near
future. He has been involved in working with church planters for many
years. I welcome his comments to this list and look forward to gleaning
from his experience. Thanks Ed for you advice.
-------------
"Digital Hymnal"
This system hooks into your sound system and plays over 1,000 hymns.
"Synthia"
This machine connects to an electronic organ or keyboard and actually plays
the
instrument. If you tell them what hymnal you use, they will program the
machine accordingly.
Both are remote control operated and are pre-programable for up to 10
songs. They allow you to determine the number of stanzas, beat, tempo,
timing, and other features. The cost of the first is $998 and the later is
around $450 (plus whatever your keyboard or organ costs).
I own neither but have tried out both for future reference.
<brother ed devries sent the following along in supplement to last weeks question of the week dealing with music. thanks brother devries. we have some great men on this list and i feel humbled by their presence. thanks brother devries. i will make the appropriate changes to the summary html on our home page and also to the text file.>>>>

Brother C.E. Bonner is not only a welcomed contributor on this list and a
defender of the KJB, he is my friend. He is veteran church planter with
innovative ways reaching people for Christ. His advice is well thought out
and useful. Thanks for your help preacher.
-----------------
What I have done is to utilize singing groups from colleges. In Wis. I can
get one or two groups a year. from Maranatha Baptist Bible College;
Northland Baptist Bible College and Hyles Anderson College.
In the summer months, when colleges tour, I usually can also get a group
from Pensacola.
I am fortunate to have 3 daughters who play the piano very well. Not
everyone can have such a luxury. And as they marry and move away, I must
trust in the Lord to send someone else.
better, maybe you could have three daughters that play the piano :-)>>>
Sometimes, I have planted a church that did not have much talent. I have
worked at getting 2 or 3 voices that sound good together for specials.
Personally, I do not allow sound tracks; I don't like surprises and be-bop
music in church. Plus, in a smaller church, you may encounter times when
the equipment is not up to parr and you have mechanical failures right in
the middle of the song.
On Sun. evening's, we sing favorites from the hymn book. We just sing the
1st and last verse of a song in order to get in more favorites. Sometimes,
we get visitors on Sunday evenings for the songfest.
church and praise the Lord in song. We break mid-way through for
fellowship and food. The service is one that we all look forward to.
Testimonies are included and we have a general good time of praise and
worship.>>
I have looked for and asked for folks who play instruments; they can be
helpful to accompany the music or to play a special.
I did start a small choir in current church. I limited the number of
members. I do not like to get into a situation where you have all most as
many in the choir as in the pew. I utilized songs that their voices could
adapt to and sing well. With out a lot of trained voices or people who can
read music, you have to improvise and realize that some song they just
cannot so well.
I have also had in people to sing from another fellowship church (go
through the pastor) for special days.
I have pastored churches that were loaded with musical talent. That's easy.
===================================================
Brother Jerry Harmon is a BIMI missionary to Puerto Rico and is worthy of
any churches support. He has been our missionary and friend since 1990.
He came to our church to be a blessing knowing full well that we could not
take him on for support. After he preached, the few people we had, took
him on for support and he has served God faithfully, representing our
church, since that time. Thanks Jerry for responding.
--------------------
We use a "hymn player" here in Puerto Rico. They are available from
Broadman Press for about $400. It includes most of the hymns we use in
Spanish. The newer models let you change the pitch, tone, and volume, and
even decide if you want the "Amen" at the end of the hymn or not.
Some come with remote controls. Well worth the investment, if you do not
have a piano player.
===================================================
John and Cathy O'Brien are some of the newest members of the list and they
are missionaries to Russia. They hail from my next of the woods, Arizona.
God is so good and he is still calling men and women to foreign fields of
service in these last days. Thanks for your insights John and for your
faithfulness.
-----------------
A missionary we know to the Tohono O'Odham Indians in central Arizona
(Brother Jay Shannon) readily admits to having virtually no talent at all.
He was given & uses "pianist-in-a-box": a music box which has in memory
over 500 old-time church hymns.
It allows you to change the type of music (piano, organ, pipes, etc) as
well as tempo. All he has to do is plug her in and plug in 2 small speakers
which he bought at WalMart and POOF! Church music.
His ministry requires that he travel from Indian village to village through
rather rugged country and a piano itself is out of the question. This
little magic box then serves two functions: portability and talent!!
We have preached at his services and we like it: she is never late and
never complains!
"pianits-in-a-box" let me know and I will let the list know.>>>
===================================================
Kevin Raub is one of the newest members of the list but has been in the
ministry 17 years and has been a Baptist church planter since 1987.
Welcome to the list Kevin and thanks for responding to the question of the
week.
Brother Grant Rice in Murfreesboro, TN told me a couple of years ago that
he has connections and access to a "computerized hymn book" for about $459.
It is flexible, quality, and plays recorded piano music.
An alternative may be if one has a computer, to play MIDI files of hymns
through his sound card. The possibilities there are great as well.
sound cards) must have noticed the music that plays. These are MIDI files
gleaned from the "Cyberhymnal". It's URL is
http://www.accessone.com/~rwadams/h/ -- There you can find hymns, their
words, their MIDI and a background of their author and inspiration. You
might try "The Baptist Hymnal" at URL
http://computerstore.utsa.edu/bsm/hymnal/ -- though I believe they are
renovating the site>>
NOTE: Look for the new "Question of the Week" on Wednesday. Take the time
to give us your input. Also if you have a question about church planting
that you would like to see "round tabled", send it to me and I will get it
out. If you want your question to remain annonymous, I will do that for you.
===================================================
Last but far from least is from a a non-member of the list but I gleaned
this information from a post he sent out over the Internet. He is a
fundamental, independent Baptist with some standards in Music. Each tape
is tastefully done with Piano. The tapes are FREE to church planters
and pastors. Hey, if you have the money -- pay this guy for his work
and efforts. The laborer is worthy of his hire and the $30 buck or so
ain't gonna kill ya! ;-)

traditional hymns played in congregational style. The following is a
reprint of the letter that comes with the set.
If you are interested in receiving a set, or obtaining more information
please contact me.

Dear Servant of the Lord,
Joyful Noise Music is dedicated to promoting conservative, traditional style music in fundamental churches. It is with great pleasure that we present you with this help toward that end. "Joyful Hymns" is a collection of old familiar hymns on tape. They are played in congregational style. This is only Volume I, and we plan more in the future. We also have plans for a similar set of Choruses. For more information on Joyful Noise Music, please visit our web site at:
http://www.netcom.com/~daledut/joyfulnoise.html
>>>>>
This tape set, "Joyful Hymns", is a joint project between Joyful Noise Music and Summerfield Baptist Church in Petersburg, MI. All performances, recording, design work, printing, assembly and duplication has been donated to this project. The intent of this project is to provide good quality taped piano accompaniment, played in congregational style. It is intended to fill the gap when a piano or pianist is not available. All tapes used are 10 minutes long to make each song quick and easy to find. Some common applications may be Missions, Chapel services, Small churches, Nursing Home Ministries, Junior churches etc.
This music ministry tool is provided to you with no obligation as long as you are actively involved in a ministry which can put it to use. In order for us to provide this same tool to as many as possible, we will accept any donations to defray the cost (the cost of each set is $30). If and when you are able, we would appreciate any donation to cover the cost of materials. Of course any donation of any amount will be graciously accepted and all donations will be directly earmarked for this project. Please understand that any donation is voluntary, we give this to you with no expectation of compensation.
Our main desire is that this music will turn hearts toward Jesus. We want it to be usable and practical. If you have suggestions to improve future endeavor, please contact us.
Thank you for serving the Lord with music.
